OpenAI is expanding Health in ChatGPT to all logged-in U.S. users aged 18 and older across web and iOS on free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, enabling eligible users to securely connect medical records and Apple Health to get more personalized insights.
TechCrunch reports that the expansion follows a testing phase carried out through a dedicated health hub that began earlier this year. The company has said health-related queries have grown from about 230 million per week to 300 million. Users can connect medical records from Epic and Oracle Health, and data from health apps and services such as Apple Health, Function, One Medical, and MyFitnessPal. TechCrunch notes that about 70% of health-related queries occurred outside the hub, and OpenAI says it does not use any user data to train its health models and works with physicians to improve health responses. The publication also notes that the service is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, per the terms.
The Verge reports that OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Health to everyone in the United States on Thursday, with Ashley Alexander, OpenAI’s vice president of health product, stating the company’s models are “capable of reasoning at levels that are better than clinician level,” though health lead Karan Singhal tempered that claim and cited Harvard and Stanford studies. The Verge adds that the broader release comes after OpenAI launched a health-focused model, GPT-5.6 Sol, and that ChatGPT Health will run on the company’s latest models.
OpenAI outlines safety and data controls as part of the rollout. The Verge notes that, with this update, users can ask questions about their connected health data in the main chat experience, and that conversations are encrypted at rest and at transit with additional encryption protections for Health data. Users can review and change which health data they connect to ChatGPT, including post-visit notes, notes from care teams, lab results, and medications. OpenAI also reiterates that its health features are designed to augment professional care, not replace it.
