The story
Adobe has expanded its experimental iOS camera app, Project Indigo, with AI-powered features that will critique photos and propose editing changes. The company describes Indigo as an ongoing experiment designed to provide more deterministic outputs through button-based prompts, while letting users opt out of the AI features and continue using the app in its original form. The updates are part of the app’s broader AI Playground and are currently being tested with a subset of users.
The new capabilities include a photo critique that offers professional opinions on framing, lighting, colors, and the emotional impact of an image, as well as capture and edit suggestions that guide users on how to reframe, adjust exposure, or change objects in viewfinder. Adobe says the features are intended to teach users photography tricks even if they don’t agree with the AI assessment.
Project Indigo’s AI Playground relies on Gemini-based Nano Banana for these features, but Adobe says it is open to swapping in other models, including its own Firefly family. The features, grouped under the AI Playground banner, are described as an experiment and may never reach a wider audience depending on user uptake and feedback.
The update also introduces four sections within the AI Playground: Styles, Object Editing, Photo Guidance, and Custom Edit. Each section contains multiple buttons or toggles that trigger GenAI prompts engineered for those tasks. Users can re-run an edit flow by pressing a button again to get a slightly different result.
